Have you ever wanted to try a traditional Japanese musical instrument? The shakuhachi is a bamboo flute with a deep, clear tone that resonates with the spirit of nature. Its sound feels nostalgic, calming, and uniquely Japanese. It gently reaches the heart of the listener. The shakuhachi is a simple flute with just five holes, played entirely with your breath.
This simple-looking flute is played using only your breath. By adjusting the angle and strength of your breath, you can create a wide range of expressive sounds. No complicated techniques are needed, just try making your first sound, and you may be surprised at the peaceful joy it brings. That first note may become a memory you’ll cherish forever.
Historically, the shakuhachi was also used by Zen monks as a form of meditation. Playing it can help calm the mind and bring deep focus, just like sitting meditation, only this time through sound and breath.

Mr. Sōzan Katō
Organizer of “Sōzankai,” a Nagoya-based shakuhachi group performing everything from classical to contemporary music.
They also collaborate with taiko, choirs, and orchestras, compose original works for traditional instruments, and produce various cultural performances.
